Why Candle Wicks Are Not One Size Fits All
The wick is the engine of a candle
A candle wick may look simple, but it plays an essential role in how a candle performs. The wick draws melted wax upward, where the wax becomes fuel for the flame.
If the wick is not properly matched to the candle, the flame may be too small, too large, or unstable. That is why responsible candle making involves more than selecting a wick based only on the amount of wax.
Vessel diameter matters
The width of the candle vessel is one of the most important factors in wick selection. A wider candle must create a larger melt pool than a narrow candle, so it may require a different wick—or multiple wicks—to burn evenly.
This is why Alondra’s Candle Co. uses different wick arrangements across our candle sizes. A 4-ounce or 8-ounce vessel does not have the same requirements as a wide 16-ounce three-wick vessel.
The goal is not to create the largest possible flame. It is to create a controlled burn appropriate for the complete candle.
Wax and fragrance affect performance
Different wax blends melt and travel through a wick differently. Fragrance oils can also influence how a candle burns because every fragrance has its own composition and characteristics.
A wick that performs beautifully in one fragrance may not behave exactly the same way in another. Color additives, decorative elements, vessel shape, and the amount of fragrance can also affect performance.
For these reasons, simply copying a wick recommendation does not replace testing the finished candle.
Burn testing brings everything together
During burn testing, the candle maker observes the flame, melt pool, wick behavior, vessel temperature, fragrance experience, and the amount of wax remaining after each session.
Testing should continue through the life of the candle because its behavior may change as the flame moves deeper into the vessel. A candle that looks fine during its first burn still needs to perform safely and consistently later.
Burn testing helps the maker determine whether the wick, wax, fragrance, and vessel are working together as intended.
