More Is Not Always Better: Understanding Fragrance Load in Candles

What does fragrance load mean?
When making a candle, fragrance load refers to the amount of fragrance oil used in relation to the amount of wax. It is usually expressed as a percentage.
It may seem reasonable to assume that adding more fragrance oil will always create a stronger-smelling candle. Candle making is more precise than that. Every wax has a recommended fragrance range, and each fragrance behaves differently when combined with wax and heated by a wick.
The goal is not to add the greatest possible amount. The goal is to create a balanced formula in which the wax, fragrance, wick, and vessel work properly together.
Too much fragrance can cause problems
Wax can hold only a certain amount of fragrance oil. When a formula exceeds what the wax can manage, oil may collect on the candle’s surface or separate from the wax.
An overloaded candle may also have trouble burning correctly. The wick can become clogged, the flame may remain too small, or the candle may produce an uneven melt pool. In some cases, excess fragrance can contribute to smoke or an unstable flame.
A candle that contains more fragrance oil is therefore not automatically a better candle.
Different fragrances require testing
Fragrance oils are made from different combinations of aromatic materials. One fragrance may be light and fluid, while another is heavier or more complex. These differences can affect how the oil blends with wax and how the finished candle burns.
That is why responsible makers test each fragrance rather than assuming one formula will work perfectly for every scent.
Testing includes observing the flame, wick behavior, melt pool, vessel temperature, fragrance experience, and performance throughout the candle’s life—not only during the first burn.
Fragrance strength depends on your space
Even a well-formulated candle can smell different from one room to another. Room size, ceiling height, airflow, open doors, and competing household scents all affect fragrance perception.
A smaller candle may be ideal for a bathroom or office, while a larger vessel may be more appropriate for an open living area. Choosing the right candle size can be more effective than simply searching for the highest fragrance percentage.
