Blow It Out or Use a Snuffer? How to Extinguish a Candle Safely

Ending the burn matters, too
As fall evenings become cooler, lighting a candle can make your home feel especially warm and welcoming. Most candle-care advice focuses on the first burn and wick trimming, but extinguishing the flame properly is just as important.
A controlled extinguishing method can help prevent hot wax from splashing, reduce lingering smoke, and protect the wick for the next burn.
Gently blowing out the flame
A candle can be extinguished with a gentle, controlled breath. Avoid blowing forcefully across the vessel because this may splash melted wax, bend the wick, or spread hot debris.
Move loose hair and clothing away from the flame, keep your face at a safe distance, and blow softly until the flame is completely out. Check the wick for any remaining glow or ember before leaving the candle.
Never walk away immediately after extinguishing it. Watch the candle briefly to make sure the wick does not relight.
Using a candle snuffer
A candle snuffer is designed to cover the flame and limit its oxygen supply. Lower the bell carefully over the flame without touching the melted wax. Hold it in place until the flame is fully extinguished, then lift it away slowly.
A snuffer can be especially helpful for candles in deeper vessels because it allows you to reach the flame without blowing across the melt pool.
The snuffer may become warm, so place it on a heat-resistant surface after use and allow it to cool.
Never use water
Water should never be used to extinguish a candle. Pouring water into hot wax can cause the wax to splatter and may expose the vessel to a sudden temperature change. Glass can crack or break when subjected to thermal shock.
If a candle flame becomes unusually large, flickers excessively, produces heavy smoke, or appears unsafe, extinguish it carefully and discontinue use until the cause is identified.
Wait before replacing the lid
Unless the product instructions specifically say otherwise, do not use a decorative lid to smother the flame. A lid may trap heat and smoke or become damaged.
After extinguishing the candle, allow the wax and vessel to cool completely. Trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch before the next burn, remove any debris, and replace the lid once the candle is cool.
